The complete platform for accessible applications

As per The WebAIM Million's 2026 accessibility evaluation of the home page for the top 1,000,000 web sites, 56,114,337 distinct accessibility errors were detected. That amounts to around 56 errors per page (around a 10% increase since the 2025 analysis). As more websites get developed, particularly in this AI age by vibe coders not entirely versed in the ins and outs of accessibility, the tendency is for these numbers to keep increasing. Accessibility has, for a long time now, been a fleeting thought when it comes to web development; through AccessKit, we hope to change that by simplifying the process of detecting and solving accessibility issues.

The starting point was axe-core. Axe-core is an open-source accessibility testing engine for automated web UI testing. Axe-core itself already handles accessibility audits incredibly well so there was no reason to re-invent the wheel. Our focus, as we develop AccessKit, is to cover the gaps left by axe-core while providing an intuitive UI and extensible rule engine. There are many accessibility guidelines which are challenging, if not impossible, to automate but we aim to automate all those that we can. If we succeed in our goal, AccessKit will become an essential tool in every web developers toolkit. We will continue to observe WCAG for best practices, develop rules to audit any missing pieces, and strive for a more accessible web experience for all.

We have a fully functional dev tool for live auditing, a widget for user control of key accessibility settings, and a custom rule engine with around 30 detection rules that go beyond axe-core (with more to come). We're at the very start of this journey and results are hard to quantify at this moment, though our analytics tell us that it's already in use; our job now is to spread the word so that implementing accessibility best practices becomes as natural for developers as writing an if statement.
